What’s the deal with cervical fluid?

What’s the deal with cervical fluid and do I seriously have to stick my finger in my vagina every day to figure it out? #askingforafriend

Dear Fluid-Curious,

Starting with the basics... Cervical fluid is fluid/mucous that is produced by your cervix and is dependent on your hormones. Because hormones fluctuate throughout your cycle, the fluid changes from watery to creamy, sticky to slippery, clear to white, etc.

Cervical Fluid and Fertility

Learning what type of fluid corresponds to what stage of your cycle can help you decide when to avoid sex if avoiding pregnancy, or when to get all sorts of into it if trying to conceive. Either way, you should take note daily to suss out your body’s particular rhythm. This CAN be done by inserting a clean finger into the vagina, but it’s not your only option!

Cervical Fluid and The Toilet Paper Test

Introducing the Toilet Paper Test. You can simply take note when you wipe! Does the paper slide? Do you see color on it? Does the paper drag? Also consider, how does your vagina feel as you just walk around throughout the day?

There are lots of options around fertility awareness and whether you’re using it as birth control or a way to optimize your fertility, it’s worth learning the cues and getting to know your body. The craziest thing is that we don’t learn this stuff in Sex Ed 101, but it’s never too late!

Cervical Fluid Resources

There are awesome books available on The Fertility Awareness Method. Get your library card and geek out! Haven’t got time for that? Call your midwife and schedule a Well Body Visit. We’ll guide you through all the deets and customize a plan that works for your goals and lifestyle!
